Fewkes Digital Archive Project

Dr. Jesse Walter Fewkes was the last of the great ethnographers and classically trained archaeologists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He lived and worked among the Hopi people in the 1890’s and is well known for his excavations and stabilization of major archaeological sites in the Greater Southwest including what is now Casa Grande Ruins National Monument and Mesa Verde National Park. He kept notebooks and took many photographs during this work. His photograph and manuscript collections are now housed in the National Anthropological Archives of the Smithsonian Institution in Suitland, MD. Hidden in these records is unpublished information that is of great value to the tribes he studied and researchers too. This project’s goal is to digitize and make these records available to these tribes and other academic institutions. The project will require high level coordination between these stakeholders to transcribe, review and organize the records. Initial estimates are that the total cost of the project is in excess of $150,000.00. Your donations now will show that the project has grassroots support from the Society membership and our friends. This support will be leveraged to apply for grants to meet the project’s financial needs. Details of the project will be provided in our upcoming December 2020 Solstice newsletter.
